Who we are and what we do: We are a constituted, voluntary run community group, set up in March 2007. We are currently undergoing the process of registering as a Charity which we hope to complete by the end of the year. We have an active management committee of 11 which includes 2 youth representatives. We aim to increase involvement in woodland based activities, including practical forestry skills, for all ages and abilities in Central and South Somerset, especially for the disadvantaged.
Services and activities we offer: We provide a variety of inclusive opportunities in woodlands and other ‘wild’ places; adult training, rural and craft skills, camp craft, environmental education and creative art workshopsforest school, woodland playschemes, family learning sessions, nurture groups for those struggling in school, creative writing and story telling, forestry and conservation days, community events . We welcome volunteers and run regular forestry and conservation days to manage the two woods where most of our activities take place. Drayton and Hallr Woods are both set up as forest school sites with shelter and compost toilet. Drayton Woods has wheelchair access. Feedback shows we are successful in increasing skills and knowledge of the countryside and environment whilst improving well being, general attainment and self esteem. All our sessions are curriculum linked and we support participants to gain qualifications where possible. Two of our boys with autism and learning disabilities have gained the top John Muir Award for Conservation.
